Has the hierarchy of the Austin, Texas barbecue scene been threatened by Lance Kirkpatrick of Stiles Switch Barbecue?
It depends on who you ask. Prior to Kirkpatrick’s arrival Austin’s top 2 were firmly occupied by John Mueller Barbecue and Franklin Barbecue.
Or is it the other way around?
The Mueller camp is unswayed by Franklin’s hogging of the national media spotlight while the Franklin camp’s allegiance is not looking likely to change any time soon.
So where does that put Stiles Switch?
My visits there have been uneven. The barbecue is always good but consistency is the bane of this kitchen.
Right now we’re putting pit boss Kirkpatrick in the number 3 spot.
How are y’all ranking your Austin barbecue joints these days?

someone on Twitter wondered why bother ranking barbecue joints? why not? we rank taquerias, steakhouses, food carts, favorite movies, places to get agua fresca….the list goes on. it’s just the nature of humans to rank things that we like or dislike.
