When I needed to break free of the angst, torpor and inertia of big city life, this was my escape route.
I’m back in Lone Star for an extended work trip so I decided to revisit my old route and see what, if any, changes have come to my old path.Red Rock Texas was officially established in 1870 when a post office was constructed but the community has existed since at least 1834.
Red Rock sits at the southern terminus of FM 812 and is where Jennifer Atwood and Nicole Henderson have established Red Rock Steakhouse, a new restaurant and saloon that would seamlessly fit in in any major metropolitan in the southwest. It’s fancy. The gals purchased the Hokanson Store, a general store in nearby Elroy that did good business upon opening in 1921 and enjoyed a 50+ year run before shuttering in 1973. It was moved in one massive piece back in 2014, the year the steak joint sprang to life.
Lonestar longnecks are cheap and the company is fine. Arnie, an elderly pensioner hails me upon walking in and we quickly get down to passing time with the topics of the day. A two-headed calf on the wall was “still warm” 25 years ago when it was brought in to a nearby school where Arnie worked. A taxidermist was contacted and now the beast rises above the assembled throng.Soon enough I break camp to continue my journey south and am handsomely rewarded when I stumble upon a pair of lovely donkeys in a massive pasture. I quickly swerve off the road, park my 4×4 in a ditch and make my way across the thoroughfare to hail my newfound friends. These beasts are in excellent condition and are enjoying regular farrier service. They are also quite friendly. One of the creatures is particularly insistent and begins nuzzling me with his big, soft muzzle. I think he can smell the peppermint candy in my mouth as he clearly wants to give me some donkey sugar. I pass the time with the animals for a few minutes before saying my goodbyes and getting back on the road for nearby Smithville where I intend on visiting one of my old haunts: Huebel’s Bier Garden.
