The best donuts in Austin by a wide margin. Yes, Ken’s has their acolytes as do Krispy Kreme and Round Rock donuts but at the end of the day it’s Mrs Johnson who rules the Austin donut roost.
The door creaks open at 8:40 pm and they sell them til they’re gone, which is usually the middle of the next morning around 10 or 11 am. While most folks roll through the handy drive thru, we always walk inside so we can chat with Gopa, the hard working owner.
When we say hard working we mean it. Gopa has worked 18 hours a day, 7 days a week since the early 80s, so anytime we hear kvetching about how hard somebody’s got it we always like to tell them Gopa’s tale of woe. They grow quiet.
The standard glazed donut is divine, but it’s the apple fritter that keeps us coming back. Scented with cinnamon, crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, it’s one of the best single bites of food you can put in your mouth in Austin proper.

RL, I’d encourage you to check out a little donut hole-in-the-wall place down on Slaughter lane – KC Donuts. It’s in the same strip mall as Evangeline Cafe. That little mom and pop place makes the most phenomenal donuts.
