It doesn’t get any more Texas than this. Legendary pit boss John Mueller, framed by the flag of the great state. Mueller had just come off twelve hours of smoking an entire steer when I took this photo. The beast was descended upon by a crowd of a hundred fanatical barbecue lovers and was decimated in short order.
Once every few months, the old pit boss teams up with the men from the Austin food forum; Shaggybevo, to put on a barbecue-based food party down on south First street at Mueller’s food truck. Given the land office business that this smoked meat concern is doing, I can’t imagine that it will be much longer before the operation shifts inside a brick and mortar.
Til then, the crowds will have to make do with the creature comforts provided by the custom built pic nic tables, the giant oak shade trees and the nearby quick mart that sells ice cold dirt cheap beers.
We’ve got it good in Austin y’all.
