In the American South when you see a sign with a smiling pig you can be assured that you’re about to dine on pork, it will be good and there will be plentiful ice cold sweet tea to wash it all down.
Belvarosi Disznotoros hits on two out of three.
They have a beautiful sign with a cartoon pig wearing an apron and a chef hat. If I didn’t alreay have plans to eat here this sign’s hypnotic sway would’ve held me powerless.
I didn’t expect there to be any sweet tea so I wasn’t disappointed there but I wasn’t prepared for there to be a case filled with boudin and for there to be fried onion rings available.
The Pig Platter has the appearance of a typical upmarket deli in Atlanta Georgia or perhaps Tacoma Washington . Everything is spotlessly clean, there’s a big case filled with cold meats to be taken away and cooked at home, another case filled with warm prepared foods and a third case bulging with prepared foods that can be cooked to order in the restaurant to be eaten there.
I spot a giant black link of what I take to be Kolbasz and big hunk of cornmeal-battered-something that I take to be a pork schnitzel. Wrong on both counts. Deliriously, happily wrong..wrong..wrong.
The kolbasz is actually Hungarian boudin noir. A vast intestine is rammed full of peppery, salty rice and pork, twisted into a tube, then heated through. The pork schnitzel is actually an onion ring. A big circle of yellow sweet onion has been dredged in corn meal to be deep fat fried by the counter man.
I take my lunch standing at a big shiny wooden plank-table of which there are several both inside and outside the restaurant. The boudin is delicious and actually carries me back to the boudin belt of western Louisiana for a moment. The fried sweet onion is also good. The crunchy high quality corn meal marries nicely with the sweetness of the onion.
Unfortunately this was the only restaurant in Budapest where I was sneered at [by the counter girl] for not speaking Hungarian. But when the food is this good she could’ve sent me along my way with a running lariat a la Stan Hansen and I wouldn’t let that dissuade me. Inner City Pig Platter; great name, great restaurant.
