Work started on New Orleans Lakefront Airport in 1929 and by 1933 airplanes were gliding in and out of the facility that juts, peninsula-like into Lake Pontchartrain.

Amelia Earhart famously stayed in the VIP suites and Katrina just as famously swallowed big portions of the structure. It took $19 million to breathe life back into the old gal.

Nowadays, thousands of private airplanes and jets take off and land annually at the former Shushan Airport.

What I wouldn’t have given to have been on hand back in ’33 to watch pilot Jimmy Wedell race through the sky at a staggering (and record-breaking) 266mph.
