Established as an ad hoc burial site in 1850, Lafayette Cemetery #2 became an official burial grounds in 1858 when the then-city of Lafayette constructed 120 tombs. Lafayette, the city, would eventually be annexed into New Orleans proper.
In 1865 an official master plan was drawn up.
If you’d like to see how New Orleans parties, hook up with a second line as it rolls by these august grounds, dancers clamber astraddle of the tombs and gyrate wildly to good effect.
