The skies over Danville, Kentucky will be perfumed with old Hickory this weekend as the 3rd edition of the Kentucky State BBQ Festival takes place in the historic downtown.
Two time world barbecue champion Melissa Cookston will be on hand, alongside Tim Mikeska, Moe Cason, Shane Draper and a handful of other people who cook meat that writers like to use the word pitmaster to describe.
I’ll stick with the word pit boss til otherwise notified or duly impressed.
Danville is a bucolic little town, perhaps best known for being the home to Burke’s Bakery (est.1967) one of the finer donut shops you’re ever likely to encounter. Centre College (est.1819) is also an anchor tenant of the community boasting an enrollment of 1300+ students, many of whom will be at this weekend’s event due to the fact there is absolutely nothing to do in Danville, Kentucky.
Kentucky’s eminent man of barbecue letters Wes Berry will be on hand signing copies of his book Kentucky BBQ as well as guest judging the pork ribs part of the competition.
Admission to this event is free.
